RC Airplane Lighting Guide

Lights aren't just for looks. Done right, RC airplane lights tell you which way your plane is pointing in the dark — the difference between a clean night landing and a crash you never saw coming. Here's how I light a plane properly.

Why orientation lighting matters

At dusk or at night, an RC plane becomes a black silhouette. You lose track of whether it's coming toward you or flying away — and that confusion is how planes get crashed. Proper lighting borrows the same convention full-size aircraft use, so a single glance tells you the plane's heading and attitude.

Navigation lights: the red/green rule

The standard aviation convention — easy to remember and instantly readable in the air:

Red — left wingtip

Red light on the port (left) wing. "Red, right? No — red left."

Green — right wingtip

Green light on the starboard (right) wing.

How to read it in the air: if you see green on the left and red on the right, the plane is flying toward you. Reversed, it's flying away. That one cue keeps you oriented at night.

The four lights worth adding

1. Navigation lights (red/green)

Steady red and green on the wingtips. The core of orientation — add these first.

2. Strobes

Bright white flashes, usually on the wingtips or tail. They cut through darkness and make the plane easy to spot at distance.

3. Tail / beacon light

A white or red light at the tail helps with attitude — telling nose-up from nose-down on approach.

4. Underglow / accent lighting

Optional, but it looks incredible. A strip along the fuselage or under the wings for show effects and rainbow modes.

Wiring the lights into your plane

Lighting shares the plane with your ESC, receiver, and servos, so plan the power before you stick strips on foam. Controlling it without burning transmitter channels

The old way meant wiring each lighting circuit to a spare receiver channel — and most beginner radios don't have channels to spare. With addressable strips and a dedicated controller, all of these effects run on a single strip and you switch between them from your phone, leaving your transmitter free for flying.
