Everyone crashes their first plane. The trick is to crash a $5 foam-board plane you can fix with hot glue — not a $300 kit you're scared to fly. When repairs are cheap and fast, you fly more, and flying more is the only thing that actually teaches you.
So the whole approach is: start slow and forgiving, keep it cheap, expect to crash, fix it, and go again. That's how you get good.

If you want a proven recipe, copy the 30-inch slow flyer: a light, 3-channel foam-board plane with an undercambered wing that flies slow and forgives mistakes.
Around $150–250 all-in if you scratch-build: a radio (~$60), electronics (~$70–90), a charger, and a $1.25 sheet of foam board. A ready-to-fly plane like the Ranger V2 runs about $230 with the radio included. After that, each new foam plane costs almost nothing — the electronics move between builds.
If you are flying strictly for recreation in the United States, you generally do not need a Part 107 remote pilot certificate. You do need to complete the free FAA Recreational UAS Safety Test, commonly called TRUST, and carry proof that you passed while flying.
RC airplanes weighing 250 grams or more must generally be registered with the FAA. Once an aircraft is registered, it must also comply with the FAA's Remote ID requirements unless it is flown within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (a FRIA) or another applicable exception applies.
You are also responsible for checking the airspace before every flight, staying within visual line of sight, yielding to manned aircraft, and following the current recreational-flying rules. Rules can change, so check the FAA's current guidance before flying.

A large open field away from people, buildings, roads, power lines, and full-scale aircraft is the safest place to learn. Before flying, check whether the location is inside controlled or restricted airspace. Being on private property does not automatically mean the airspace above it is unrestricted.
The FAA's B4UFLY services show where recreational pilots can and cannot fly and identify airspace restrictions near airports. If authorization is required in controlled airspace, recreational flyers may be able to request it through an approved LAANC provider. For a more structured place to learn, an established model-aircraft club can provide a maintained flying field, experienced pilots, and local safety guidance.
You do not generally have to join the Academy of Model Aeronautics just to fly recreationally in the United States. However, a local club can be one of the fastest and safest ways to learn. A club may provide a maintained flying field, experienced pilots who can help with a maiden flight, local operating procedures, and access to training. Individual clubs may require AMA membership or have their own rules before allowing someone to fly at the field — check the club's requirements before arriving.
You can, but an experienced RC pilot can dramatically improve the odds of a successful first flight. A builder may not notice reversed controls, excessive control throws, an incorrect center of gravity, a weak radio installation, or a setup problem that an experienced pilot will catch immediately.
A local club may be able to help with the preflight inspection, radio setup, control-direction checks, range checks, launching, trimming, the maiden flight itself, and training on a buddy-box system. Yes. Do a range check before the maiden flight, after a receiver or antenna installation change, after a crash, and whenever you suspect a radio problem. Use your transmitter manufacturer's specific range-test mode and instructions — I won't publish one universal distance, because different systems use different reduced-power modes and testing procedures.
During the test: keep the aircraft restrained; verify reliable control at the manufacturer's specified test distance; test with the motor off and, where the manufacturer recommends it, with the motor running; move the aircraft through different orientations; confirm the receiver antennas are installed as specified; and do not fly if control becomes intermittent.
Treat an electric RC airplane as live whenever the battery is connected. A motor can start instantly from a bumped throttle stick, a radio setting, a receiver failsafe, a wiring fault, or an accidental command. Remove the propeller while configuring the receiver, calibrating the ESC, testing control directions, or troubleshooting the power system — any time the prop isn't actually required for the test.
At the field: keep people out of the propeller arc; stand behind the propeller when possible; restrain the airplane before connecting power; use throttle cut; confirm the throttle is at minimum before arming; and disconnect the flight battery before carrying or working on the aircraft. Safety glasses are smart, but they don't make it OK to stand in the propeller arc.
There is no single safe wind number for every RC airplane. A large trainer can handle more wind than a small lightweight plane, and gusts are often harder than steady wind. For a first flight, pick a large open field and wait for calm, predictable conditions — small trainers like an 850mm airplane are especially sensitive.
Check the average wind, the gust speed, the wind direction, the crosswind relative to your flying area, and any nearby trees or buildings that stir up turbulence. Lean on your airplane manufacturer's guidance and your own experience rather than one universal number. (A weather app is fine for the forecast — but it is not an airspace tool; use B4UFLY for airspace.)
Learning time varies, but a slow, stable trainer, simulator practice, and help from an experienced pilot can shorten the learning curve considerably. A stabilized plane (like the Ranger's Reflex system) or an RC flight simulator helps a lot — crashes in a simulator are free.
Both work — it depends on what excites you. Buying means you're flying this weekend. Building means every crash is a $2 repair instead of a heartbreak, and you learn how everything works. My honest suggestion: whichever gets you to the field faster is the right answer.
