I saw someone on YouTube build a hovercraft, thought it was too cool not to try, and there were no plans — so I set out to figure one out myself. This is that early experiment: how a hovercraft floats, the flaw the ground kept exposing, and the RC running gear that made it go.
A hovercraft only does two things, and it needs a way to do each. Lift: air is pushed down into a skirt underneath the craft, building a cushion of pressure that floats the whole thing a fraction of an inch off the ground so there's almost no friction. Thrust: a second airflow (or a steered one) pushes it forward and a rudder in that airstream steers it. Take away the friction and even a small motor can scoot a surprising amount of weight around — that's the whole magic of the machine, and the whole reason it's so fun to drive.
The skirt is what traps the air cushion, and it's where a homemade hovercraft lives or dies. Mine had holes in the bottom to distribute the lift air, and the field taught me the lesson fast: the ground was rocky and loose, and the rocks kept getting sucked up into the holes. A hovercraft wants a smooth, flat surface — a gym floor, a driveway, calm water, packed snow. On loose rocky ground the skirt both loses its cushion to the gaps and ingests debris. If I built another, the skirt design and picking better terrain would be the first two things I'd change.
Under the shell it's ordinary RC electronics — the same family of parts as a plane, just arranged to blow air instead of fly:

If those three parts sound familiar, they should — it's a motor, an ESC and a servo, exactly like wiring a simple RC plane. Learn the electronics on one and you can build the other.
This was one of my earlier projects and a deliberately rough experiment: no plans, figure it out, see what the ground teaches you. That's still how a lot of the best builds start.
