The Best Laser Cutter for RC & Model Building

A CO2 laser turns a stack of balsa or light ply into a perfect rib set in minutes — every part identical, kit-quality, at home. Size the bed to your planes: an 8×12-inch K40-class machine handles formers, a 20-inch bed cuts full rib sets, and a 20×28 bed takes 12×24 sheets. What a laser does for RC

It cuts flat parts, perfectly and repeatably: wing ribs, formers, fuselage sides, doublers, gussets, jigs — from balsa, light plywood, foam board, depron, and acrylic. Draw the part once and cut ten identical copies, or a whole rib set that actually lines up. It's how kit manufacturers make parts, and a desktop CO2 laser brings that home. If you build balsa or ply — or you want to sell short-run kits — it's transformational.

Read this before you buy: a CO2 laser is a shop tool, not a desk gadget.
  • It won't cut metal. CO2 lasers cut organics and acrylic; metal needs a (far pricier) fiber laser.
  • Never cut PVC or vinyl — the fumes are toxic and corrode the machine. Know your material.
  • It needs real ventilation (ducted outside), eye-safe operation, and the bigger machines need water cooling and dedicated space.

How to pick: match the bed to your planes

The single most important spec is bed size — it has to fit your biggest single part. A 20″-span rib fits almost anything; a full-size fuselage side or a 40″ wing panel needs a big table. Everything else is secondary:

  • Bed size → the largest part you can cut in one piece (fewer seams).
  • Wattage → cutting speed and how thick a ply you get through in one pass (45–55W cuts balsa/light ply fine; 90–100W powers through thicker stock and stacks faster).
  • Autofocus + pass-through → less fiddling and longer parts, on the higher machines.
  • Your shop → all of them need exhaust; the big ones need water cooling and a real footprint.
