RC Airplane Wiring Diagram

Four connections wire a whole airplane: the battery plugs into the ESC, the ESC's three wires go to the motor, the ESC's servo lead goes into the throttle channel — where its built-in BEC also powers the receiver, so no second battery — and each servo plugs into its own receiver channel. Battery goes in last, comes out first. The labeled diagram below is the standard setup on every plane I build; print it and keep it on the bench.

A beginner RC plane has four connections: the battery plugs into the ESC, the ESC’s three wires go to the motor (swap any two to reverse it), the ESC’s servo-style lead goes to the receiver’s throttle channel and powers the receiver through its BEC, and each servo plugs into its own receiver channel with the signal wire toward the pins. Nothing else is needed.

On a real trainer: wiring the 30-inch trainer

On my first-plane build the chain is: a 3S 1300mAh LiPo (XT60) into a 30A ESC, the ESC's three bullet connectors onto a 2212-class ~1400Kv motor swinging a 9×6 prop, and the ESC's servo lead into the receiver's throttle output (channel 3 on my FlySky's AETR order). Full-throttle draw on that combo runs under 20A, so the 30A ESC has real headroom — and a 1300mAh 30C pack can deliver about 39A, so the battery covers it too. The ESC's BEC feeds 5V up that same throttle lead and runs the receiver plus both 9g servos, each plugged into the output my radio assigns to its function. Five parts, four connections, no receiver battery anywhere.

Don't do this: "fixing" a backwards motor at the battery

The prop spins the wrong way, so someone flips the battery connector to reverse it. That is the one mistake with no second chance — reversed battery polarity kills an ESC instantly, usually with smoke. Motor direction has nothing to do with the battery: swap any two of the three blue motor wires at the ESC and the motor reverses. That's the entire fix, and it's why those three wires are unlabeled — order doesn't matter until you check thrust direction, prop off, on the bench.

Hookup order that won't bite you

Servos into their assigned outputs → ESC lead into the throttle output → motor wires onto the ESC → transmitter on → battery in last. Then the 30-second radio check from behind the plane: stick back moves the elevator up, stick right raises the right aileron, throttle blows air backward. Common Questions

RC wiring, answered

No — on a standard setup the ESC's built-in BEC taps 5V off the flight battery and sends it up the same three-wire lead that carries the throttle signal. That one lead into the throttle output powers the receiver and every servo plugged into it. Never add a second power source to the receiver while the BEC is connected.
There is no universal order — channel numbering is set by your transmitter's ecosystem and model setup. Connect each lead to the output your radio assigns to that function; the transmitter's channel-monitor screen shows the mapping (many FlySky and Futaba radios default to AETR — ailerons on 1 — while Spektrum uses TAER, throttle on 1). Each servo uses one three-wire lead — signal, positive, ground — and most receivers print S / + / − next to the pins so you can check orientation.
Swap any two of the three wires between the ESC and the motor — any two — and the motor reverses. Never reverse the battery leads to fix rotation; reversed battery polarity destroys an ESC instantly. Air should blast backward over the tail when you advance the throttle.
Servos into their receiver channels first, then the ESC lead into the throttle channel, then the three motor wires onto the ESC. The flight battery is always the last thing you plug in and the first thing you unplug — and the prop stays off until the radio checks are done.
